Planning for the County Fair

Oy, missed a few posts this week! Summer is hard on blogging. At any rate, I wanted to give a quick update on my plans for the county fair, since I started dreaming about it back in February. When our fair premium book came out last month, I was excited to find a couple of new classes available in the gardening division for this year, so of course I had to revise my plan of action.

Potted Herbs – I’m going to do a mixed herb planter in a galvanized wash tub I picked up at a thrift store. I’m going to choose an assortment of Mediterranean herbs and top dress the soil with a pea gravel mulch.

“Cup of Joe” – this a planted arrangement in a tea cup. I found a beautiful Japanese china tea cup and saucer for it at a thrift store. I’m still debating on what I’m going to plant in it – I’m considering a miniature rosemary globe topiary, or possibly succulents like hens and chicks. Or maybe miniature ferns or orchids… I clearly have no idea yet!

Pumpkin Bread – I think my gluten free version is actually good enough to compete against the wheat varieties, so we’ll see how it stacks up!

Jam – possibly either strawberry or blueberry – I haven’t decided this one yet either.

Salsa – I’m going to do mildly spicy tomato and lime version.

Pickled Cucumbers – going to do a classic dill pickle, with small whole cucumbers.

So, a couple more decisions to make, then into the garden and kitchen to put together my entries – our fair is in August so I’ve got a little time to put together the best of the best and be choosy.
