Fair Planning 2018

School for the kids is out, we went from 40 to 80 seemingly overnight and all of the trees have leafed out, which can only mean one thing – summer has finally arrived in Illisconsin. And with the arrival of summer, we find ourselves close on the heels of country living’s biggest event, and fair prep kicks into high gear. The McHenry County Fair posted this year’s Fair Book, and as always, I was excited to give it a peruse. By and large the entry divisions and classes don’t change much year over year, there are usually some tweaks. I’m most excited to see gluten free baking getting better billing. Instead of one gluten free catch-all category (it’s kind of hard/unfair to have cookies go head to head against cake, or bread), they broke it out a little more, with GF cakes, GF cookies, GF quick breads and GF breads. Now we’re talking! There are also new classes for sugar free baking too.

I’m expanding my food entries this year (I do every year, come to think of it) and I’m branching out of foods, and entering some of my household items in the Antiques division. It will be fun to see what the judges think about some of my favorite possessions. I’ve also decided not to enter anything in the gardening categories – maybe. Still actually debating that one. So, I think I have my list, but I’m going to sit on it for a week or two and decide if I’m ready to finalize, since entries don’t close until mid-July.

On top of my own stuff, my son and I are doing two entries in the Mommy & Me division, for a Lego build and a collection. And my son is doing two individual projects for 4H this year. For the first time ever, I took fair week fully off work and I’m so excited about it. So why not do it all?
